ORIGINS OF THE COMPETITION
The Sydney Schoolgirls Competition was founded in 1997 to introduce secondary school age girls in Sydney to the game of Vigoro. Decades earlier, Vigoro was prominant in the school sport curriculum but was removed in the 1960s to make way for new sports at the time.
The competition has been more heavily promoted in the Western Sydney region to co-incide with the Parramatta District competition, however nominations are open to all NSW schools. The Sydney Schoolgirls competition is administered by the NSW Women's Vigoro Association with assistance and support from dedicated teaching staff from participating schools. Each year NSWWVA donates up to $1,000 shared prizemoney for the winning schools to spend towards new school sports equipment.
From 1997 to 2003, an annual NSW schoolgirls team was selected to play against Queensland in a tri-match competition held in Port Macquarie. In 2003, NSW won its first State of Origin competition and Queensland withdrew thereafter from further participation.
